Resources
Is it possible to not read the books and begin play? Absolutely!
Many have done it successfully. It -does- mean you'll have to ask
questions when creating a character and not everyone will have the
time to explain everything. Below is a list of places to start.
The absolute be all and end all of resources are still the main
five books by J.K. Rowling, along with her school books listed below.
But all the links are helpful, too. Read and enjoy!
Links of Help:
The
Harry Potter Lexicon -- By far the most complete site for information.
While I don't always subscribe to their timeline (they list years
which I don't think are relevant) nor their maps (no one has a full
view of this but Ms. Rowling herself) the list of spells and characters
for this world is unmatched at this site.
The
Page of Generators -- Stuck as to a name or a wand for your
C? This page has several things, including a house name generator
and a wand generator, and several fantasy name generators which
would be helpful.
Get
Sorted -- this is a quiz but if you answer it like your C you
can find out what house they are in. Another twist and a very fun
piece of help is The
Harry Potter Astrology page. It not only tells you a bit about
the 12 signs of the western zodiac, it also gives you a clue how
they might act if they were sorted into different houses.
Harry
Potter Fans Spellmaker -- Well, not a spell maker, that's a
misnomer. This is a clever way of making a potion recipe for the
Rowling Universe.
Potion Maker This is really cute and is very flexible. It lets you make
up your own names for things!
Currency
Converter -- Dollars to Galleons. If you want pounds just take
the amount of dollars times about 1.25.
NOTE: This converter isn't as accurate as we would like. Based on figures for Dollars, pounds and galleons given by J.K. Rowling in the introduction to Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them it should be about £5.60 or $7.00 to the galleon.
Babynames.com
-- Names and their meanings given. Nuf Sed!
Whoohoo.co.uk
-- a British Dialect Translator . Want your posts to sound a specific
way but don't know the accent? Here's a place that will help!
Language Translators -- Babelfish
does many things like German, French, Italian. InterTran
does some more unusual ones including Latin (good for spells) and
Hungarian, Finnish and Romanian, as well as some more common languages.
I personally like this one the best.
Gypsy to Rom -- Run a
gypsy? Here's a word and phrase 'dictionary' in .DOC format.
Insultmongers
Swearasaurus -- How to swear in over 100 languages! Could come
in handy for adult Characters or Bodhi Unreal. ((Sorry Ashe, my
apologies Bodhi, I couldn't resist)
Graphics -- Dervish And Banges
has lots of backgrounds and graphics for webpages if you wish. Also,
if you have Paint Shop Pro, Fireworks or Photoshop, I have large
versions of the House
Crests here. Some of them are by me, though there are also scans
of some done for the trivia game. Right click to save if you are
on a PC.
